Cawley’s visit to the Manhattan campus is part a citywide collective  effort to develop future New York City talent

New York, February 13, 2024 – Today the New York Jobs CEO Council, a market-driven talent incubator, partnered with CUNY Baruch College hosted its ninth CEO Speaker Series in New York City. The fireside chat event featured Tim Cawley, chairman, president and CEO of Con Edison, Inc. and S. David Wu, president, CUNY Baruch College, who participated in an intimate conversation on leadership, talent development, and the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive job creation. Cawley’s visit included a meeting with campus leadership and faculty.

Led by CEOs of large employers, the Jobs Council is committed to hiring 100,000 low-income New Yorkers into in-demand careers, including 25,000 job seekers from the City University of New York (CUNY). Since 2020, the New York Jobs CEO Council has helped nearly 40,000 jobseekers find a role paying a family-sustaining wage, and over 7,500 of those are CUNY graduates. The CEO Speaker Series supports this mission, connecting influential business leaders with students and faculty in the public education system.

“New York City is a powerhouse of talent, and Con Edison is leading the charge with us on preparing the next generation of talent for a future within the energy sector,” said Kiersten Barnet, executive director of the New York Jobs CEO Council. “As one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States, and one of the world’s largest energy delivery systems, Con Edison is an integral partner to our work in New York and we appreciate their support to ensure CUNY students are both skilled and prepared.”

Cawley’s visit to the campus included a meeting with campus leadership, which provided a unique opportunity for meaningful dialogue around how to best adapt college curriculum to meet the needs of employers. In a recent jobs report by the World Economic Forum, technological literacy, critical thinking, environmental stewardship, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data were among the most sought after skills that employers are looking for. The New York Jobs CEO Council bridges industry and education to enhance career outcomes, equipping students with the in-demand skills essential for the future workforce.

“In order to be successful in today’s workforce, students must be given essential tools and skills that will give them a competitive edge post-graduation,” said S. David Wu, president of Baruch College. “Cawley’s visit to Baruch College demonstrates that New York employers are looking for talent that is well prepared for the workforce, Baruch College is exemplary in updating their curriculum to meet the demands of employers.”
